Haha brush lettering design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows the word HAHA repeated in rows of bold, black brush-stroke capitals on a plain white background. The letters are rough and tapered, with dry-brush edges, and the rows drift diagonally and overlap, forming a loose, dense composition. The design is entirely black ink with no greys or colour.

At ten past three the laughing started in bay C, and Nadia Okafor, who had been counting saline bags in the clean utility room, put down her clipboard before she knew she had moved. Bed seven belonged to Mr Harold Pryce, eighty-one, admitted that evening with a hip that had gone in the bath. He was propped up with his blanket folded square, the way his wife had left it before the taxi came. "Sorry, love," he said when she reached for the finger probe. "It's the ceiling. Have you seen the ceiling? Every tile's got a face on it, and they're all doing exactly what I am."

His obs were fine. His pupils were fine. Nadia looked up anyway. Someone had left the corridor strip light running, and the tubes buzzed out of step with each other, flickering in a slant across the curtain rail so that the shadows stacked and slid down the wall like dropped cards. She thought of her mother at the kitchen table in Lagos, who only ever laughed like that when the post had been bad, and she did not say so.

At handover she wrote the word on the whiteboard in small capitals, then another row beneath it, then another, each drifting lower and further right until the marker squeaked dry. Mr Pryce, bed seven, she added at the bottom. Settled. Then she laughed once, quietly, and rubbed the whole board clean with the heel of her hand.
