Hand-drawn OOPS lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the word OOPS written in bold, loose, hand-drawn black linework, with an exclamation mark at the end and two sweeping underlines beneath. The strokes are even and of uniform weight, with no shading or fill. The design sits on a plain white background with no colour and no body part visible.

Dear Maureen, I know you said not to write until the Ballast was back in Grimsby, but the post office in Lerwick takes letters for the crew and I need you to hear this from me before the Harbour Board does. The net got snagged on the wreck off Sule Skerry on Tuesday. Pete said leave it, Davey said cut it, and I said I'd have a go at winching it up myself because I'm the bosun and bosuns don't walk away from a bit of trouble. The winch did not agree. It let go with a noise like a cow falling down stairs and the whole drum spun backwards, and I went over the rail sideways in my good oilskins, which I now realise were not as good as I thought.

Nobody was hurt, though Davey has been calling me Captain Splash since, and the skipper has made me write the incident in the log in capitals. He's written underneath it, in his neat little hand, just the one word. I'll not tell you what it is, but you can guess. We're limping home with a bent davit, a dead winch and a cargo of haddock that the auction will hate us for.
Anyway, the reason I'm writing is the picture I've been drawing on the back of the chart table, the thing I'd like you to get tattooed on me when I'm ashore if you still think I'm worth the ink. Two long strokes underneath, like the wind's dragging the word along, and a great big exclamation mark that's really my own face with the mouth open. I'll bring the sketch when I'm home. Mind the kettle while I'm gone.
Yours, slightly damp, Tam
