The rain had been coming down on Harrow Street market since six, and by eleven the tarpaulins over the fruit stalls were sagging like wet sails. Mrs Okonedo at the teas had asked me for a sign, and I'd spent the whole week lettering it at my kitchen table with a script nib I bought off a dead man's shop in Deptford. She wanted one word and three dots. Nothing else. "People don't read a sign that shouts," she said. "They read one that asks them to lean in."

The sign went up on the hook above her urn on Thursday. By Friday the whole row had changed. The bloke selling phone cases stopped bellowing his prices. The two lads who ran the knife sharpener kept their radio low. Even the gulls seemed to have been told. I'd come down with a flask to watch it happen, and I stood by the bins listening to the market go quiet in a way that had nothing to do with the weather.
On the Saturday a girl of about nine came running down the aisle with a jam jar of coins held against her chest, and she skidded to a stop under the sign, squinting up at it. Her mum was calling her name from three stalls back. The girl looked at the word, then at the dots, then put one finger to her lips and tiptoed past the urn as if the whole street were asleep.
Mrs Okonedo caught my eye and laughed, and I laughed too, and the rain kept on falling, loud as anything, on everyone who hadn't yet learned to trail off.
