Halloween graveyard scene on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

The design covers the upper arm in a night-time graveyard scene with a full moon, bats, a bare tree and a dark house on the skyline. Jack-o'-lanterns, tombstones, a stone cross and faint ghostly shapes sit across green grass in the lower part of the sleeve. Bold outlines and soft shading are used throughout, with purple, green and orange ink dominating the colour palette.

Sit yourself down, love, there's tea in the flask, and you'll not want to look at that pumpkin on the trolley too long, it's been grinning at Dennis all night. Halloween on Ward Seven at St Aldric's was never quiet, but the year Maureen Pell took the night shift, the porters had carved three faces out of the kitchen's catering pumpkins and set them along the nurses' station like a row of lamps.

Old Mr Corrigan in bed four had been waiting for the moon all week. He said the chapel garden out back had a proper graveyard hidden behind the hedge, with a stone cross, a leaning headstone and a little slate-roofed hut that nobody had opened since the war. He wanted to see it lit up. Maureen told him the window only showed a car park and a sodium lamp, and he laughed at her and said the moon was a full one and it would do.

At ten past three the candles in the pumpkins went out together, though nobody had lit them since midnight. Then the call bell over bed four began to ring, and when Maureen went in, the bed was empty, the blanket folded square, the window open an inch on a cold smell of cut grass. She found him in the chapel garden, sat on the bench beside the cross with his dressing gown over his knees, looking up at a moon as white as a plate. The three pumpkins had come down the path after her, rolling on their bases, and had settled themselves in the wet grass around his feet.

He held out a pumpkin lid to her with a candle stub stuck in it, and it was scratched in biro: Back by six. Then he nodded at the lamp in the car park, the one that buzzed, and said the night staff never remember that the dead get a late pass on this one night of the year.
