Jack-o'-lantern pumpkin with bats

Traditional · Mixed · Photo

A grinning jack-o'-lantern pumpkin with a curling green stem and vine sits at the centre, with three black bats above and two green leaves to the left. A grey shaded banner across the base reads 10.31. The pumpkin uses orange and red fills with black outlines and bold traditional-style linework, and the composition is tightly framed on the skin.

Mind the lock gate, it sticks, always has since the winter the Tolley boy tried to ride it like a horse. Right, sit down on the coal sack, the kettle's on. Her owner, Ada Pickering, bought it off a stall at Skipton market for threepence because it had a face on it already, carved by some child who'd given up halfway. Ada said a thing with a face wants a candle in it. So on the thirty-first she lit a stub of tallow inside and set it on the cabin top, and the orange light went out across the water like a lamp left burning for somebody who wasn't coming home.

Bats came down off the church tower at dusk, three of them, wings like old umbrellas. They followed the boat all the way to Bingley. Ada swore they were counting the locks. Her husband Frank laughed until he had to sit down on the beam.

By the time they reached the bottom gate the candle had burned to a stub and the pumpkin's grin had gone soft at the edges, its green stalk curling over the hatch like a question. Ada leaned out with the windlass and said, well, we're nearly there, and that was the last she ever said of it, because the gates swung open on their own and the bats went up after the moon. Frank kept the pumpkin until it rotted. He never once cut another.
