Oogie Boogie and Halloween characters on a calf
Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a large yellow-green cartoon monster resembling Oogie Boogie, holding up two red dice, with a grinning jack-o-lantern, a grey skeleton-style figure, a small red devil and a witch in a purple hat grouped around its base. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading on the monster and shadowing beneath the figures to give some depth. Colour is used throughout, with yellows, oranges, purples and reds against the pale skin of the leg, and the figures are arranged to fill the calf.

She said it at the shed, at the water butt, at the gate where the wind came off the reservoir. I told her to stop counting chickens before they hatched.

The stranger arrived on the Thursday, in a waistcoat the colour of a bruise, carrying a hessian sack that clicked when he set it down. He had a grin like a row of sugar cubes and a laugh like gravel rattling in a tin. He wanted to play for the plot. Two red dice, one roll each, and the high score takes the best marrow on the site. Dolores said yes before he finished the sentence, and I, being the sort who likes a fair game, said yes after her.
Dolores rolled a four and a two. I rolled a six and a six, which should have ended it, except the little black pips shifted when nobody was looking, and the sack chuckled under his arm. He said the pumpkins would be his by Hallowe'en, and that every good gardener owes a small debt to the dark.
On the night itself I carved the biggest pumpkin into a grin, set a candle inside, and left it on the path by the compost heap. By morning the candle had guttered out, the pumpkin was gone, and in the bed where it had sat lay a single red die, six face up, its pips still sly.
