Hamburger and retro TV tattoos on a leg
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
The left panel shows a shaded hamburger with red tomato and lettuce, above and below the words FOREVER and HUNGRY, which are crossed out with red lines. The right panel shows a television set with bold black outlines containing a sunset over waves, a palm tree and small birds, with a red sun. Both designs use solid colour fills in orange, red, yellow, green and brown, with partial tattoos visible at the image edges.

Mrs Doreen Pask had been told by her late husband that the sea air would make the lodgers stay, and for thirty years she had assumed he meant the rent. The Marlow Court boarding house sat three streets back from the front at Saltwick, and its residents came and went like the tide: commercial travellers, a widowed organist, a boy from Leeds who never paid for the chips he ordered on his tab.

Then there was Ray Tennant, who arrived in March with a suitcase and a cardboard box of tins, and who announced at breakfast that he meant to stay forever. Doreen wrote FOREVER on the rota board in red chalk, because it looked like a joke and she had no patience for jokes before nine. Ray laughed and ate two fried eggs, a round of toast and half of her husband's sausages, which had been in the freezer since the funeral.
The lounge television picked up only one channel, and only when the aerial was angled at the lighthouse. Every evening at six it showed the same thing: a sun sinking into grey water, a palm tree leaning on a sandbar that did not exist anywhere on the Yorkshire coast. Ray said it was a station from somewhere warmer. Doreen said it was a test card someone had forgotten to switch off.
In June the fish-and-chip shop shut, the gulls grew fat on the bins, and Ray packed his tins back into the box. He left the rota on the wall with FOREVER still there, and beneath it, in his square capitals, HUNGRY. Doreen rubbed at the second word with her thumb, then thought better of it and left it be, because the cook had gone and somebody would have to make the toast.
