Cupcake and strawberry with life is sweet script

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A cupcake with pink frosting, sprinkles and a strawberry on top sits in a striped wrapper tied with a red bow. The script words life is sweet curl across the upper left of the design in black linework. Bold black outlines and flat red, pink, yellow and green fills give it a cartoon-like look, set against plain skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nadia had been told the lift was broken for the third time that week, so she carried the tray up eleven flights with her elbow hooked round the rail and a tea towel over the top. Twenty-four cupcakes, each with a swirl of pink frosting piped the way her nan had shown her, and a strawberry on every one, because the Co-op had run out of cherries and she was not going to apologise for that.

The notice from the housing association was still taped to the lobby door. Someone had written under it in marker: LIFT IS NOT SWEET. Mr Okafor from the fourth floor watched her climb past with the look of a man who had already decided the cakes were a bribe. They were a bribe. She just hadn't settled yet what they were buying.

She knocked on the flat at the top of the stairs, the one the council had spent months pretending was empty. Mrs Lowther opened the door in a quilted dressing gown, glared at the tray, then took one and peeled the paper off with her teeth. "Too sweet," she said, and ate the rest of it standing on the mat, frosting on her chin, while the lift behind them groaned and gave up again.

By Friday the petition had eleven names, a cake-shaped stain on the top corner, and a red bow drawn in biro beside Mrs Lowther's signature. Nadia pinned it to the lobby door over the old notice and went back up the stairs, counting floors out loud, because the lift was still broken and life, it turned out, was sweetest when you had someone to climb it with.
