Heart and infinity with script on a wrist
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A shaded heart outline is formed by an infinity loop, with the script words Forever in my heart running across the centre. The linework is crisp and the heart has soft grey shading that gives it some depth. The tattoo sits on the inside of a pale wrist against a wooden floor, shown in a close, slightly angled photograph.

Sit closer, the wind up here takes words off the wall and drops them in the moat. Now, where was I? Ah, the smith of Harrowgate, and the lady Ysolde who climbed the hill in the rain with a wax heart pressed flat inside her glove. She wanted a band of silver that would bend round like a river with no bank at either end. Across its middle she wanted letters. The smith said he could not read, so she read them to him slowly: forever in my heart.

He worked three nights by the forge, folding the wire over itself, crossing it and crossing it again, until the loop sat in the shape of a heart pinched at the top, with a ribbon of silver running through its middle like a road through a valley. Her husband, Sir Rafe, had gone south with the wool carts and never sent word. Every Friday she came up the hill and asked if the ring was ready, though it had been ready since the first frost. What she really wanted, the smith realised, was to know where the loop began so she could be sure of where it ended. He told her there was no beginning and no end, only the one line going round. She said that would do.
The carts came back in spring with no Sir Rafe on them, and the lady stopped climbing the hill. The smith kept the ring on his bench for years, polishing it when the damp got into his joints. When he died his grandson found it in the cellar of this very keep, bent flat under a fallen stone, and beside it a second ring no bigger than a thumbnail, the same heart, the same loop, with no letters at all.
So when you pass under the old lintel on your way out, look up at the heart cut into the stone with a line running through it. Nobody in Harrowgate ever learned who it was for. The smith left it there anyway, which is the only thing that ever really lasts in a place like this.
