Fine line cat outline behind the ear
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a cat sitting in profile, facing right, with whiskers and a long curling tail. The linework is thin and even, in black ink on pale skin. The tattoo is centred on the image beside the ear, with the hair and earlobe partly visible at the edges.

The cat was already on the vestry windowsill when you arrived with the flowers, sitting in profile the way Mrs Pardoe's cats always sat, as if someone had drawn him with one unbroken line and then decided to leave him facing the light. Nobody had let him in. Nobody, the vicar said, had ever let him in.

Your job was simple. Keep the cat out of the photographs, keep the hymn books in order, and make sure the ring stayed in the left pocket of Tomas's waistcoat until it was needed. You managed the first by lifting him down twice. The third time he walked past you with his tail up, the tip curled like a question mark, and settled on the end of the front pew, facing the altar as though he had been booked.
The organ started. The bride came up the aisle on her father's arm, and the whole church turned the way churches do. The cat did not turn. He watched the door, then the flowers, then the gap between the bride's shoulder blades, and when she reached the step he stood, stretched his back into a long clean arc, and walked out into the aisle ahead of her.
Nobody moved to catch him. The bride laughed, the sort of laugh that holds the whole day up, and followed him the last few steps to where Tomas waited. Afterwards there were photographs, and in every one of them there is a grey shape at the edge of the frame, sitting neat as a stamp, looking exactly where the two of them were going.
