Serotonin molecule outline on the thigh
Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A small black outline drawing of a molecule, with its ring structure and labelled groups including NH2, HO and NH, sits on the side of a pale upper thigh. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a dark blue-black. A hand rests at the top of the frame and a grey knitted sleeve fills the left edge against a dark background.

Dear Hollis,

The reunion committee has finally found the old chemistry lab, or what's left of it. They've knocked through the store cupboard and put the kettle where the Bunsen burners used to stand. I went up on Thursday to check the chairs and found the molecule still on the back wall, the one you drew across the whole whiteboard the week before mocks, arms spread like it was about to make a run for the door. Someone had painted over the board, but the ghost of it came through in grey.
I stood there holding a tin of custard creams, trying to remember which ring you kept getting wrong. You always put the hydroxyl on the wrong carbon, and Mr Pemberton used to tap it with his pen until you sighed loudly enough for the whole row to hear.
I still have the sheet you handed in that day, folded in the back of my planner. Forty-one out of fifty, with his tick beside the diagram and 'good, but read the question' in green ink. I thought you'd want it back before Saturday, so I've put it in an envelope with this letter. Bring a name badge and your own pen, because they've run out of both again.
Yours, Denise
