Hand reaching for hanging keys
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A pale hand is raised against a plain beige wall, fingers partly curled as if reaching for one of several vintage keys suspended on thin white strings. A small, solid black keyhole tattoo sits on the inner wrist, with crisp edges and no visible shading. The soft focus on the background keys and the neutral tones keep attention on the hand and the tattoo.

Our village sits where the beech wood gives up and the lane goes soft with moss. Every spring my grandmother strung old keys from the lowest branches of the hedge at the wood's edge, each one on a length of white thread, and every autumn she took one down. She said the wood kept what people locked away and gave back only what it was asked for.

The autumn my brother Tomas left for the mills in Leeds, I stood beneath the hanging keys with his old house key in my fist. Mother had pressed it into my palm that morning, wrapped in a handkerchief, as though it were still worth something. The keys turned slowly above me, catching the grey light, and none of them looked like a door I knew.
I reached up and found the thread on the highest branch, the one that had been there longest. My grandmother's key hung from it, brass gone green, its teeth worn smooth. I had never once thought to ask what it opened. When I finally tugged the thread free, the key came down into my hand with a small cold weight, and the oak behind it had a rough iron keyhole set into its bark, as if the tree had grown around a lock it had been asked to keep.
I did not try the key. I hung Tomas's house key in the place the thread had been, and I tied my grandmother's key back on its own length of string, because some locks are only for leaving closed. Behind me the village lights came on one by one, and I walked home to the door that actually fitted.
