Small envelope tattoo on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand and wrist are shown against a wall pinned with postage stamps, envelopes and letters. A small envelope outline is tattooed on the inner wrist in thin black linework with no shading. The muted brown wall and pale skin make the single dark tattoo the clear focal point, with the stamps framing it.

Nobody in Tarrant House had seen the postman climb past the fourth floor, so the post went up in the lift with whoever had the key to it. When the lift stuck, which it did most Tuesdays, the letters sat in a wire basket by the bins until someone came down for them. Ada Pell came down for them. She was nine, she had nobody to write to, so she read the addresses aloud instead.

She took the stamps off first, soaking each envelope in a saucer of milk so the paper gave up cleanly, then pinned them to the stairwell wall where the damp had made the plaster soft. A ship from Bermuda. A red queen with a crooked crown. Forty-one butterflies from a parcel that had come open at the corner. By the first frost the wall looked like a map of somewhere nobody had gone.
On the morning the lift gave up for good, a letter arrived addressed to a flat that had been empty since spring. Ada carried it up all nineteen floors and found the door open and a woman sitting on a bare mattress, holding an envelope she had been too frightened to open. Ada sat beside her and read it aloud, slowly, the way she read the addresses, until the words had nothing left to be afraid of.
Afterwards Ada stopped pinning the stamps. She kept one plain envelope instead, no stamp on it at all, and when she wanted to be sure something would reach her she pressed her wrist against the cold glass of the landing window and drew its outline there in biro, small as a thumb, so the post always knew where to find her.
