Harrow Dunn lettered shutters on Cutler Lane, where the gas lamps came on before the dusk had finished with the sky. Each evening a stranger with a waxed moustache stood across the road to watch him work, coat buttoned to the throat, and he never once gave a name.

One November the stranger asked to be drawn. Harrow offered his pencil and the back of a bakery docket, but the man wanted only grey, the ink worked in slow layers, because colour told lies and grey kept what was really there. Harrow worked by the lamp until St Giles struck two. When he looked up the stranger had gone, leaving the docket folded on the counter with a single farthing lying on top of it.

Days later Harrow noticed the drawing was no longer on paper. Every shutter he painted that week came out with a small dark moustache tucked into one corner of the lettering, shaded so finely it looked like a shadow that had grown tired of its owner. The baker opposite complained that his loaves were being signed by a gentleman. Harrow scrubbed at the marks with turpentine, but grey only darkens under water, and the swirls spread outward like smoke from a struck match.

On the last night of the month he shuttered his own window and walked home without looking back. In the morning the lettering had gone from every front on the lane. In its place, in the glass of each shop window, a calm grey face looked out at the street, patient as a clerk, waiting for someone to ask it to stay.
