They had rung the school bell for the last time in the spring of 1979, and nobody in Wexcombe had spoken of it since. So when the invitations went round for the reunion in the village hall, most people came out of curiosity. Nan Oakley came with her hands raised before her face, fingers long and spread like a heron's legs, the nails dipped in black. Through the gap she watched the room the way a child watches a grown-up's quarrel through the banisters.

Her grandmother had told her the old story by the hearth. A girl in the village had seen the miller's son take the bell's clapper and drop it in the mill race, and when the parish asked who had done it, she covered her eyes and said she had seen nothing. The clapper was never found, and the bell never rang true again. The girl kept her hands over her face for the rest of her life, her grandmother said, because a hand held over the eyes is a hand that has seen too much, and it must keep the gap narrow or the truth comes out through it.

Across the room Tobias Rede stood by the trestle table with a paper cup. He had been the miller's son, and he had been the one blamed for the clapper, and he had left Wexcombe in disgrace before the summer was out. Nan watched him lift his cup and saw his shoulders drop, as if someone had finally taken a sack off them. A tear ran down her cheek, and she let it fall.

She lowered her hands. The room went quiet. Tobias turned, and she told him the truth in one short sentence, and up the lane, in the stone tower of St Mary's, the bell that had been silent for forty-four years gave one clear note.
