Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A handwritten black script phrase, 'as he promised', sits above a smaller line reading 'deuteronomy' and the reference '26:19'. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the lettering is centred on a plain white page with faint ruled lines.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Oswin Teague had worked the window at Carrow Bridge for thirty-one years, long enough to tell a hand that had been taught from one that had taught itself. The envelope pushed under the glass that wet Tuesday was the second kind. The words ran level and unhurried, every loop closed, as though the writer had practised on the back of feed sacks until the shapes stopped shaking.

The sender was a nurse called Ilse Varga, writing to her brother Tomas on the far bank of the river. Oswin was not supposed to read personal post, and he did not, not properly, but the first line had a way of landing in the eye. You said the river would take a month and it took the winter. Here is the second copy of everything, in case the first one went under with the boat.

He turned the envelope over. The flap had been licked and then pressed again with a thumbnail, which meant she had been afraid of it opening. Behind him the lorry idled, its driver tapping the wheel to the radio, and the rain ran in a thin sheet off the customs roof. Oswin weighed the letter in his palm. It weighed nothing, which was the trouble with paper that mattered.

He read the last line before he could stop himself. Under her signature, almost an afterthought, she had written: Come home by the bridge, as he promised. Oswin stamped the front of the envelope twice, the way his father had taught him, and slid it into the outbound tray. The ink sat dark on the paper, and for once he felt sure a thing would arrive.
