Be Present brush lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

Two words in bold black brush lettering, BE PRESENT, sit in a horizontal line across the centre of a plain white background. The strokes are solid and uneven, with visible dry-brush edges and tapered ends. The image is monochrome with generous white space around the text.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Four in the morning and the ovens are already ticking up to heat. Flour dusts the scales, the bench, the sleeve of your jumper. Above the proving cabinet, Aunt Vi's label still hangs on its curled strip of masking tape, her capitals gone soft at the edges: BE PRESENT. When you started here you read it as a telling-off, the sort of thing a woman says to a boy who keeps checking his phone over the bread.

She taught you to listen before she taught you to measure. Press the dough with two fingers, she said, and wait for it to push back. Too slack and it sighs; too stiff and it argues. You learned to hear the difference in the slap and fold of the bench, to notice when the gluten tightened into silk and the bowl went quiet. Most mornings it was the only thing you were sure of.

This morning the phone buzzes on the shelf. A letter from the landlord, you know without opening it, because you have been carrying its weight since Tuesday. Your mind runs ahead to rents and figures and the rest of the year, and the tray of seeded batons stays in the oven ten seconds too long. The smell reaches you before the alarm does. You pull the rack out, black-edged, and stand there with the oven door open and the heat on your face.

Then you do what she would have done. You tap the base of a loaf, lean your ear close, and wait for the hollow knock. Outside, the street is turning from ink to pewter over the bins and the bus shelter. You set the good ones on the cooling rack, one by one, and you do not look at the window once.
