Handwritten 'I'm so proud of you' on forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph is split into two panels. The upper panel shows a handwritten note on pale teal paper reading 'I'm so proud of you' with a sign-off that ends in 'Dad'. The lower panel shows the same handwriting tattooed in black ink across the forearm, with fine, even linework and solid black lettering on light skin.

The note was tucked under the lid of my tool case, folded twice and gone soft at the creases, as if it had travelled a long way before anyone left it for me. I knew the hand before I unfolded it. My father wrote the way he split slate, with more force than the work needed and no room left at the end of the line.

The kingdom of Caddmoor had little use for new roofs that year. The old quarry above Sallow Ford had flooded, the king's surveyors wanted their fees paid in silver, and the guild had sent me home from the glasshouse with a sack of cracked moulds and a lecture on my temper. I had told the master glazier that the bell-frame at St Brannoc's would bear its weight. It did not. It came down on the Tuesday market with a sound like a cart of pans going over, and nobody was killed, though the pear seller lost his stall and I lost my place.
I read the note three times standing on the bridge over the millrace. There was no grand praise in it, only those few plain words and his name pressed hard into the paper. Beneath them he had drawn a small square of slate with a hole bored through its middle, the kind he used to test a roof before trusting it to hold a man.
I folded the paper along its old creases and walked back up the hill to the glasshouse. The master was still at his bench. I told him I would rebuild the frame myself, and this time I would test every joint before I hung a single bell.
