The gold leaf wouldn't lie flat on the Crown and Anchor's window until I breathed on it, so I stood on an upturned crate at half past two with my breath fogging the glass and the cold coming up through the pavement on Mill Road. Dad always said you learn sign-writing from the wrong side of the glass, backwards, and I was still getting the R in REFRESHMENTS the wrong way round.

The old shopping lists were in a biscuit tin under our stairs, forty years of them, all in the same slanted capitals that leaned like they were late for a bus. I had been copying his hand for a month, practising on the back of invoices, because the landlord wanted the original name back up and nobody else in Salford could still cut a proper serif by eye. Every list ended with the same loopy sign-off, a small scrawl that looked like a heart someone had been interrupted halfway through drawing.
A taxi slowed behind me. A lad leaned out and shouted that the pub was shut, and I raised the brush without turning round. I laid the last stroke of the final letter, lifted the brush clean, and stepped down onto the cold kerb to look.
From across the road, under the streetlamp, the name read true in gold, and nobody walking past could have told which of us had made it.
