Handwritten lettering on the back of the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows two lines of hand-drawn lettering on the back of a neck, reading Babby Girl with a larger initial B. The letters have uneven, wobbly strokes in a single blue-grey ink, with the shading kept flat and simple. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against pale skin, with a red garment visible at the bottom edge.

Dear Eddie,

You will not believe what came through the buffet door on Thursday. Kieran Doyle, the lad who sweeps platform two for the contractors, marched up to the urn holding a sheet of cardboard out like a menu. Across it, in blue-grey biro gone wobbly where he had pressed too hard, he had written BABBY GIRL, with a great fat B leaning over the rest like a man waiting for a bus. He had done it for his sister's baby, who arrived on the Tuesday, eight pounds and furious, and he was so proud he could barely hold the card straight.

I told him the B was the best letter in the word and the other five could take a lesson. He laughed and said Shannon had spotted the spelling within ten seconds and told him he'd better learn his vowels before the christening. Then he asked whether I thought a design like that would look daft inked somewhere permanent. I said anything a person is daft enough to want forever usually is. He has a cousin in Leeds with a machine and a good heart, apparently, and the plan is to copy his own handwriting exactly, mistakes and all, because he says the ones he made at nine are the ones he likes best.

I pinned the card above the urn with a drawing pin from the ticket office. Every time the 7.42 pulls out, the whole cup shelf rattles and I think of you on that ferry from Halifax, too stubborn to write a proper letter. Come home for the christening, Eddie. Bring your bad spelling. We'll need someone to read the card out loud.

Love, Ruth
