HTML head and body tags on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck, below a khaki cap, with two lines of HTML markup tattooed in black: </head> above <body>. The letters are bold and solid with clean edges and no shading. The skin and a grey t-shirt fill the background, and the composition is centred on the tattoo.

Dear Ysolde,

You will think me mad, but the Chamberlain has finally had the Royal Mason carve the two marks above the east gate, and the whole court has been shuffling about like geese since dawn. I told him the old runes were clearer, but he insists the new script must be read by everyone, even the stable boys who cannot tell a comma from a crow's foot.
Reading it aloud at noon, the herald stumbled over the first line, which says simply "close the head" and then "open the body". Nobody knew what it meant until Master Pell, who has kept the ledgers for forty years, pointed out that the king had been ruling from his head for so long that his body had grown stiff and cold in the gallery. The council had merely been waiting for someone to write the instruction down properly.
So yesterday they closed the king's head, which I am told involved a great deal of silk and a hushed prayer, and this morning the body went down to the kitchens and asked for porridge. It has been cheerful ever since, though it cannot yet remember which of its sons is which.
I suspect I shall be asked to copy out the next line, and I confess I have been practising the flourish for the closing bracket. Do write soon, and tell me whether the gardeners have yet found anyone willing to open the gate.
Yours in ink, Alder
