HTML head and body tags on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's neck, where two lines of text sit one above the other: </head> and <body>, written as HTML tags. The letters are solid black in a bold sans-serif typeface with clean, even edges, and the lines are closely spaced and centred on the neck. The background is a plain pale wall, and the person wears a khaki cap and a grey top, so the lettering is the clear focus of the frame.

Ada had carved the marionette's head in February, when the river ran high and the workshop smelt of wet lime. She gave it a long nose and eyelids painted thin as tissue, and it sat on the bench like a small bishop waiting to be dressed. Her father used to say a head was the easy part. Anyone could make a face. The body was where a puppet either lived or lay on the floor.

She pencilled the markings on the inside of the neck block the way he had taught her, one line to close the crown and one to open the shoulders, so that whoever mended it later would know where one part ended and the next began. Outside, a Thames barge crept under the bridge with its sails furled, and the bargeman whistled a tune that ran out of breath halfway through each phrase. Mrs Pilling's grandson pressed his nose to the window and asked what the writing was for.
"Instructions," Ada said. "So it knows where it stops and where it starts."
He frowned at the scrap of pencil. "Does it need them?"
She didn't answer straight away. She was threading waxed cord through the shoulder holes, and the work needed her full attention, the way a tide does. When she finally pulled the first cross-bar, the puppet lifted its chin and looked at the boy as if it had been waiting all winter for someone to ask.
