Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of the side of a neck showing two lines of grey lettering. The upper line has a large, hand-drawn initial followed by the word Abby in lowercase, and the lower line reads GIRL in block capitals. The ink is a soft grey, the lines are fairly even, and the shot is taken straight on against a red top.

The big B was drawn by her uncle, who had the steadiest hand left in the cargo yards after the press seized in the Long Dark. She turned her collar down, let them look, and took the ferry out through the gap by the sound of the bell and the cold line of ink under her ear, which she had traced a thousand times in the dark.

In spring the new registrar arrived with a working press and a clipboard. He asked her, kindly enough, why she had never updated her mark. She laughed and told him it was the only thing on Halden that had never needed updating.
