Ruth found the note under the teapot, wedged beneath the sugar bowl where the draught from the back door couldn't reach it. Pencil on the back of a feed merchant's invoice, the letters leaning as if they had been written standing up in a hurry. Gone to market. Be back soon. Then the signature, which had clearly taken the author some thought.

The sow had come to them from Ruth's grandmother, along with the orchard, the leaking tractor shed and a habit of undoing bolts that nobody could explain. Ruth checked the pen first. The latch was open from the outside, which was the trouble with pigs. They learned faster than the people who built the fences.

She drove to the Thursday sale in Frome with the windows down and the invoice on the dashboard, half expecting to be laughed at. Pig was not hard to find. She was at the far end of the pens, working a crate of windfalls with the calm of a customer who had already settled her account. The stallholder said she had paid with a brass button and seemed to think that was fair.

Ruth bought the rest of the apples, sat on the tailgate and turned the invoice over. Under the feed figures she wrote in her own cramped capitals: Be home by six. Keep out of the cheese stall. Love, Ruth. Then she loaded the sow, who went up the ramp without a backward glance, and they drove home the long way past the river, the note riding on the seat between them.
