Handwritten quote across the top of a foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Three lines of black handwritten script run across the top of a bare foot, with the toes visible below. The lettering uses thin, even linework in a single dark ink with no shading. The text is set on a diagonal from upper left to lower right, and the pale skin tone of the foot provides strong contrast.

The note had been pinned to the back door of the chandlery since Tuesday, its corners curling in the sea damp, and Nell read it each morning with her first cup of tea, the way other people checked the tide table. Gone to market. Be back soon. Love, Pig. Nobody in Porthallow had called Eddie Tremayne anything but Pig since he was eleven and tried to eat a whole crab for a dare, and nobody had seen him since the Thursday boat.

Her sister said he'd run off with a widow from Penzance. The harbourmaster said he'd taken the bus up to the cattle sales at Bodmin, which was true as far as anyone could tell. Nell had her own view. In thirty years Pig had never once left a room without a note, and a man who wrote "soon" so carefully was a man who meant it, even if he had been too nervous to say what he was afraid of.

On Friday she took the ferry across herself, his good coat folded over her arm and the note in her pocket. The market hall smelled of diesel and wet sawdust. At the far end, beside the empty pens, a stallholder was selling eggs in grey cartons and whistling badly through his teeth. He looked up and said, "You'll be Nell," and pushed a biscuit tin across the trestle. Inside were three bus tickets, a pencil stub and a receipt for one pig's worth of feed, dated the Tuesday he'd left.

That evening she stood on the quay with the pencil from behind the till and smoothed the paper flat against the door. Beneath his lines she wrote, in letters as careful as his: Got your message. Coming back the same way. Love, Nell. Then she went in to put the kettle on, because a boat was due at six and somebody had to be at the slip.
