Black line tattoo of a hanging sign reading Gone to Market, sitting on the top of a foot in a hand-drawn lettering style.

Gone to Market sign on top of foot

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A pale foot rests on a dark plastic sheet, showing a black linework tattoo of a hanging sign with the words Gone to Market written across it. The lines are simple and slightly uneven, with the lettering as the main feature and a small loop and hook at the top of the sign. The image is in black ink only, with the tattoo centred on the top of the foot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sign went up on the Tuesday, hung from the same hook it had always used, and by Wednesday Mrs Okafor from the flat above had already knocked twice to ask whether we were dead or merely idle. Pearl wrote the message herself, in capitals that leaned like a drunk on a lamppost, and then crossed out the apostrophe she'd put in Gone because she said it looked like we were missing a letter.

We were not missing anything. We were off to the wholesaler in Smithfield with a van that had one working headlight and a list written on the back of a bread wrapper. Pearl wanted saffron, a crate of the good plums, and something she called a proper cheese, which she said we could not get anywhere else in the borough. I wanted to sit down. Between us we had enough sense to put the kettle off and the sign out, and that was the extent of our planning.

We came back at four with two boxes of plums bruised on their journey and no saffron at all. The sign was still turning slowly on its hook in the draught from the door, and somebody had pinned a note beneath it reading Where did you go? in green felt tip. Pearl read it, shrugged, and turned the sign round to say Back soon, which was true in the way most things are true if you are generous about soon.
