Quote lettering on the top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two lines of black serif text, She has no idea. above The effect she can have., are tattooed across the top of a foot. The letterforms are solid and even, with the ink shading to slightly soft edges on the skin. The foot rests on a wooden floor beside black glitter ballet flats and denim jeans, with the text as the clear focal point.

Dora Hale had mended the same pair of black glitter flats four times before she said anything. "Soles are gone, love," she told the girl across the counter at the cobbler's on Mill Street, where the bell over the door rang every time sleet blew in. "Lining's gone too. Do you want a new pair or shall I keep stitching?" The girl laughed and said she'd keep stitching. The new ones were for the Christmas show, and she wasn't going to wear them to rehearsal and ruin them.

Alf, who kept the bakery next door and watched that shop window the way other men watched football, said the girl walked past every morning at seven with her jeans turned up at the ankle, and half the street stopped sweeping to see her go. Dora told him to get back to his proving. "She has no idea," Alf said, pressing his floury nose to the glass. "Of what?" Dora asked. "The effect she can have."
On the night of the show, Dora sat at the back of the church hall in her good coat. The flats went round and round under the strip lights, the glitter throwing little stars onto the ceiling, and the boy from the chemist's forgot to breathe in the second act. Dora stopped breathing too, for a second, and was annoyed with herself for it.
The girl came into the shop the Monday after, still in her ordinary trainers, and found the flats waiting on the counter, re-soled and sewn so neatly you could not see where the old leather had been. Alf had left a roll on top of the box, still warm, and nobody had told her who it was from.
