One November a dock porter called Tomasz Wren sat down with a face like wet cardboard and asked Hal to write to his daughter in Gdańsk. Hal wrote every word the man said, and when Tomasz reached the end he stopped, pressed his thumb flat on the paper and said, now the last bit in your hand, not mine. So Hal wrote Love you, Dad, small and slanted, the way his mother had taught him at a kitchen table with a cold cup of tea going skin on top.

The reply came in February, folded inside a Polish calendar, and Tomasz brought it to the stall with a grin that split his face in two. The daughter had written in a looping, careful hand that she had carried the first letter in her coat all winter. At the bottom she had put a row of crosses and circles, and beneath them, in pencil pressed hard enough to dent the page, Tata says hello too.

Hal read it aloud twice because Tomasz asked him to. Then he took the calendar page home and pinned it above the sink, where he could see those crosses every time he rinsed a cup.
