Sit down, sit down, the wasps have had their fill of the windfalls and they'll leave you be now. Late summer, this was, the year the Pennick orchard gave its last cider apples to the press, and old Tom Gabbitas was walking home along the bottom hedge with his boots full of dew when he came upon a stranger sitting under the damson tree, drawing in the dust with a stick.

He was a thin man in a coat too heavy for August. He said he had three things to give away, since nobody in his family had wanted them, and whoever asked first would have their pick. Tom was a practical man, so he asked which would serve him best. The stranger reached into his pocket and held up a dented brass lighter. It would never go out in the wind, he said, and it would light a man home after dark, though it would not light the way for anyone else.

Tom shook his head at that and nodded at the wireless set on the wall, which hummed with a sound like a far-off hive. The stranger set it on the stones and it fell quiet. The third thing was a crown of old silver, dull with age, and Tom would not touch it at all. So the stranger hung it on the damson's lowest branch and walked off between the rows without another word, and the mist came up behind him like a cloth being drawn.

Tom never learned the stranger's name. The lighter is on his grandson's mantel in Ledbury now, and it still throws a flame in a gale. Every September the boy takes it down and tells the story to whoever stays still long enough to hear it.
