Deathly Hallows symbol on the neck

Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A single black tattoo of the Deathly Hallows symbol sits centrally on the back of a neck, with dark hair visible at the top of the frame. The symbol is an outlined triangle with a vertical line running from its apex to its base and a circle set within the triangle, drawn in consistent thin black linework with light soft shading. The photograph is black and white and tightly framed on the skin, keeping the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Sit down, you, and mind the goats. This is the tale of the Vellacott road, which runs out past the salt flats where the sun does its worst. Three brothers came walking it one August, having buried their father under a juniper with nothing to show for him but a debt and a dog. At the place where the road splits into a third, a stranger sat on an upturned crate, tapping a pebble against his teeth.

He told them their father had made a wager with Death at cards and lost the first round, and that Death, being a gentleman, had let him keep three things to pass on. He held them up one at a time. A rod of green ash, straight as a surveyor's line. A grey stone with a hole worn clean through its middle. And a cloak of cloth so thin the light came through it like water. Then he asked which brother wanted to go first, and the eldest said he would take the rod, because a man should always have something to hit with.

The middle brother took the stone and found, that night by a dry well, he could hear his mother's voice in it, which he had not expected and did not thank the stranger for. The youngest took the cloak and walked off into the dunes, and nobody on that road has seen him since, though some say his tracks still come back every spring, going the other way.

So you see, the three things were never the reward. They were the road, cut into three, and each brother had to walk his own piece of it. Now hush, the goats are settling.
