Haunted house and moon on an ankle
Traditional · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A teal and dark-green haunted house with lit yellow windows, a pale yellow moon and small bat shapes sits above a banner reading HAUNTED. Bold black outlines define the building, banner and partial script at the right edge, with flat colour fills and light shading. The tattoo is photographed straight on against a pale cream bedsheet, with the ankle bone visible at the bottom of the frame.

No, don't light the lamp yet, let the fire do the talking. Where was I? Ah, the house on the cliff road, the one with three towers and paint gone nearly black in the rain. Mrs Pellow kept it as a boarding house after her husband went down with the herring boat, and she lit every window every night, because she said a lit house has no room for anything that isn't welcome.

The lodgers were a sensible lot until Mr Tregarthen took the top room in the east tower. He complained of small dark things flitting past his glass at dusk, always in pairs, always going round the lamp like moths that had forgotten what moths are for. Mrs Pellow told him they were only the house breathing out. He didn't believe her, and I don't blame him.
Then one October the moon came up yellow as a farthing over the bay, and his bed was made up tight, the lamp was burning, and his boots were set by the door. The only thing on the pillow was a scrap of paper in his neat hand: gone to count the lights from the sea.
So if you walk down to the harbour on a clear night, look up at the cliff road. You'll see the top window lit, and a little dark shape or two circling it. Pass me that cup. And mind the bottom step, it's loose, like most things in this town.
