"He Lives" script lettering design
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows the words "He Lives" written in flowing, cursive script in dark grey or black on a plain white background. The strokes vary in thickness, with fine hairlines, long looping entrances and exits, and a larger capital H and L. The lettering is centred with generous white space around it, which suggests a stencil or flash-style design rather than a photograph of skin.

She wanted the words done in a hand that looked as if someone had written them quickly, one evening, under a lamp. I told her that was the hardest kind to fake.

I worked late that week, with the shutter half down and the streetlights of the arches coming orange through the glass. The H had to lean like a man leaning into wind, its crossbar hung on a single hairline. The L I gave a long loop that ran past the edge of the plate and came back, because she had told me he was always going somewhere and never quite leaving. I pulled every stroke with a quill worn thin from years of use, and by two in the morning my wrist ached the way my father's used to.
When she came back on the Friday she stood in front of the finished panel for a long time without speaking. Then she asked whether the e in Lives could be a little smaller, as though he had been shy with it. I said I could do that. I didn't tell her I had already made it smaller in my head, the way you do when you have been looking at a thing for too long.
She paid in cash, counted it twice, and left the glove on the bench.
