Heart and arrow on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo

A small outline tattoo of a heart pierced by an arrow sits on the inside of a pale ankle, with a grey ribbed sock pulled down beside it and a black lace-up boot at the left. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink appears pale pink or red against the skin. The tattoo is small and centred in the frame, with a grey pavement background.

The snow has buried the cairns again, so you cross the Hollin Gap by memory and by the sound of the beck running somewhere below. Your satchel knocks against your hip with every step. Inside it, wrapped in oilcloth, is a letter from the lower valley to a widow at the top farm. You have carried post over this pass for three winters and never once opened a letter, which is the only rule your father gave you that you have kept.

Halfway up, where the track bends under a split boulder, a ewe stands square in the path and refuses to move. You shout at her, then give up and sit on a flat stone to wait, because you have learnt that a stubborn animal on a mountain is best answered with patience. While you wait you turn over the envelope in your hands. The widow once told you that letters are only arrows fired at people who have moved too far away to hear them.

The ewe wanders off at last. At the top farm the door opens before you reach it. The widow takes the oilcloth and turns the envelope over, and tucked behind the seal is a small card you do not remember seeing before. It holds a drawing in brown ink: a heart with an arrow through it, the point aimed back down the way you came. She reads the letter standing in the snow, then laughs, then pins the card to the lintel with a rusted nail. The arrow points down the pass, towards the valley, and from the track you can still see it when you look back.
