Rainbow wave line tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A single thin wavy line runs around the inner wrist, like a band or bracelet. The linework is delicate and even, with the wave rising and falling across the skin. Each section of the line is a different colour, moving through green, yellow, red and blue against the plain skin and a blue-grey background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been falling on the Tuesday market since before the bells, and Mabel Orrin was the only stallholder still selling thread. Her ribbons hung from a pole like wet flags: green from the marsh dyers, yellow from the weld fields, red from the madder pits at Saltcote, and blue from the woman who dipped cloth in the mill pond.

A boy came under the awning with coins in his fist and asked for a length of ribbon that would not wash out. Mabel told him there was no such thing, only ribbon that washed out slowly. He said his grandmother had told him the river was the only thing that kept its colour, and that you could tie a wave round your wrist and carry the water wherever you went. Mabel laughed and cut him a span of each colour anyway, because it was raining and nobody else was buying.

She sat him on an upturned crate and knotted the four lengths together, green, yellow, red, blue, and where the knots met she pinched the cloth into little peaks so it would rise and fall like water over stone. He tied it on himself and pulled it tight. The rain ran off the awning in a line, and a little of each colour bled into the grey of the cobbles beneath.

Years later, Mabel said, the boy came back with salt in his hair and a ship that had never sunk, and asked for another wave. She told him the river had taken the first one. He said no, the river only borrowed. Then he held up his wrist, and the four colours were still there, faded but in order, and the market went on in the rain.
