Frances had been tying the red thread round her finger since the Monday the band from Halifax didn't turn up, and by the Saturday the knot had become a habit she could no longer undo. The Palais smelt of carbolic and spilt lemonade. Behind the cloakroom hatch she kept the tickets in a biscuit tin, and every one with a cross pencilled beside it belonged to a man who had promised to come back for his coat.

Eddie Marsh came back on the third Saturday in October. He was thin in the way of men who had been away at sea, and he laughed at the thread before he asked about it. "Somebody's keeping you," he said. "No," she said. "I'm keeping myself, and the thread is for the list." The list was small: buy bread, post the rent, ask Mr Cooke about the leak over the stage. The thread reminded her of each item in turn, its line running round like a ring she had decided not to wear.

He leaned over the hatch and looked at the bow, a clumsy loop with two tails that never quite matched. "You've tied it wrong," he said. "My mother tied them that way too, and she never once got a bow to sit straight." Frances did not ask him what he meant. She pushed the biscuit tin across the counter and let him find his own cross, faded to a grey smudge, among the others.

He took his coat and went out into the rain without looking back. She sat for a while with the tin in her lap, then unpicked the thread from her finger and tied it round the handle of the tin, where it could keep the list for whoever came next.
