Heart and cat tattoos on two fingers

Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two hands are held towards the camera, each showing a small tattoo on a finger. On the left finger is a filled red heart with a dark outline, and on the right finger is a solid black cat silhouette with its tail curling up. The plain background is blurred, and the tattoos are shown in sharp focus on the skin.

Dear Tomasz, the black cat came back again this morning and sat on the bollard outside the chandlery as if it had paid the mooring fees. Mrs Pryce says it belongs to nobody, which is what they said about you the summer you took the Morwenna past the breakwater without asking anyone.

I have been thinking about the tin of red paint you left under the stairs. You said you would be back before the tide turned twice, and I counted the tides on the wall calendar, one pencil mark each morning, until the paper went soft at the corners. Lena at the bakery says I look thinner. I tell her it is the wind.

Last Thursday the cat walked the length of the quay in front of the lifeboat men, tail up like a question mark, and stopped at the end where you used to sit mending nets. Nobody moved it. Old Dai swore the gulls went quiet for a minute. I sat down beside it and we watched the grey boats come in one at a time, and I counted them the way I count tides.

I painted the buoy by the slipway in that red, the same shade as the heart you drew on the back of the tide chart, so anyone coming in past the point will know someone here kept their side. Come home before the cat decides you are gone for good. Yours, Ilse.
