Do you remember the tin of nails you buried under the oak on the towpath when we were eight? Mum thought we'd lost it for good. I went back last week with Dad's trowel and found only rust and a bent spoon. Before you left I drew something on the inside of the cabin door in carpenter's pencil, a heart with a line running down its middle, and I've been tracing that line with my thumb every night since, the way you'd feel for a latch in the dark.

Here's what I didn't say at the lock. I drew the heart in two halves on purpose, one for the barge and one for whoever goes off to work the river without us. If you're reading this somewhere with a proper roof and a bed that doesn't rock, the other half is yours to finish. Come down to Hanwell on Saturday. Bring the trowel. We'll dig up the tin together, and this time I won't pretend I haven't been counting the days.
