Small black outline heart tattoo on the side of a finger, in a fine line style, with a silver feather ring on the finger above.

Small outline heart on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart drawn as a single thin black outline sits on the side of a finger. The linework is fine and even, with no shading or fill inside the shape. The background is dark and the skin is lit softly, so the black ink stands out clearly against the pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The baker at Hollin Cross rose before the rooks, as her mother had, and lit the oven while the lane was still black. Nobody in the village could say why she cut a heart into the crust of every loaf that left her door, only that it was always the same shape: one line drawn round, and nothing put in the middle.

One winter a boy came up from the coast road with frost in his hair and asked for bread on credit. She gave him two rolls and asked his name. He said Tobias Fenn, and that his father had sailed from the harbour at Crane and not come back. She cut a heart on one roll and handed it to him. Eat the edge first, she said, then you'll know where the middle is.

He laughed, taking it for a riddle, and went down the lane chewing. Years later he came back with a sack of flour from the mill he now kept, and asked why the middle had been left empty. She was dough to the elbows and did not look up. Because a heart drawn in outline still has room, she said, and a loaf with room in it rises better.

He stayed to knead beside her until the window went grey. When the first cart rattled past she lifted a tray from the oven and set it on the sill, every crust scored with the same plain line, and the sun came up behind them both.
