Matching red bow wrist tattoos

Other · Colour · Photo

Two small bow tattoos sit on the inner wrists of a pair of hands held together. Each bow is filled with solid red ink and outlined in thin black linework, with a dot at the centre knot. The photograph is taken at close range against a sofa, with the bows as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had been sweeping the haberdashery floor since six, and the grey light through the shutters showed her the pins her mother had dropped the night before. Across the counter, Ivy was counting reels of red grosgrain, lips moving, pretending she was not counting the minutes until the bus.

The ribbon had come off a bolt bought at a market stall in Bradford, three yards short of what Mr Abbott wanted for the window. "We'll cut it," Ivy said. "Nobody's going to notice a bit gone." Nell measured out two lengths, each about a hand long, singed the ends over the candle, and tied them into bows the way their gran had taught them, loops fat as plums, the knot pinched tight in the middle.

They had argued all week about who would go first to the new flat in Halifax, and this was their answer: two identical bows, one for each of them, to be kept where the other could see. Nell pressed hers flat with her thumb and felt the stiff satin resist. Ivy tied hers on her own wrist, lopsided, so she laughed and did it again.

When the first van pulled up at half five, the bakery across the road had already lit its ovens, and the smell of proving dough crept under the door. Nell held out her hand, palm down, and Ivy pressed her wrist against it. Both bows sat exactly where they should, one small red knot against the other. "Same time next week," Ivy said, and went out into the cold without looking back, which was how Nell knew she would be back.
