Small outline heart on a hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart is drawn as a thin black outline on the skin between two fingers, with the hand partly folded so the tattoo is the focal point. The linework is clean and even, with no shading or fill. The close, tightly framed photo shows warm skin tones and a dark shadow beside the tattoo.

The snow has sealed the pass since Tuesday, and the inn at Hollin Gap has become a house of strangers who are slowly learning each other's coughs. You are the one who carries the coal up at five, because Mrs Aske's knees will not take the stairs any more and because nobody else wakes before the kettle does. This morning the scuttle is light and the fire is low, so you kneel on the hearthstone and rake the grey ash with the iron rod, the way your father once taught you, quick and without fuss.

On the inside of the stove door, someone has drawn a heart in old soot with a fingertip. It is one thin unbroken line, except at the top left, where the hand must have slipped and never gone back. Nobody has wiped it away, because the stove has been lit every morning for forty years and the heart has survived every one of them.
Mrs Aske comes down in her wrapper while you are still crouched there. She says her husband drew it the winter he asked her to marry him, when he had no ring to offer and the stove door was the only glass in the house that would take a mark. She says the gap at the top was where he always meant to go back and finish it. You say nothing. You pour her tea and hand it to her in both hands, and she holds it without drinking.
The pass opens on Thursday. Before the carrier's horses come up the valley, you take a rag from the bucket and do not touch the stove door. You leave it ajar so the morning light falls through the glass, and on the flagstones the heart throws a thin dark shape, open at the top, waiting for whoever comes next to close it.
