Fine line tattoo of a heart entwined with an infinity symbol on the upper back near the neck, seen from behind.

Heart and infinity symbol on the upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small heart and infinity symbol are joined together in a single thin black outline. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the design sits on warm, lightly tanned skin. The photo is taken from behind, with the subject's hair pulled up and the tattoo placed centrally in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cable came aboard in the dark, coiled in iron tanks below the waterline, and Mr Pryce wanted every splice marked before it went over the side. Forty-one days out of Falmouth and the sea had gone the colour of pewter. I held the lamp while Owen bound the two ends of the core, copper threads no thicker than hair, and he kept humming the same three bars of a hymn his mother used to sing.

We laid it westward at a walking pace, the drum turning with a sound like a long breath let out. Each joint got a loop of waxed twine stitched through the sheath so the engineers in Newfoundland could count their way to a fault. Owen scratched his own mark into the lead sleeve with a nail: a heart, and then a figure of eight run through it, so the line never quite ended. Pryce said it was unprofessional. Owen said the Atlantic was unprofessional and we had to be civil to it.

In the fourth week the weather came down like a dropped sack. The cable parted at the stern sheave with a crack I felt in my back teeth, and we spent two grey days grappling the bottom with hooks while the ship rolled her rails under. When at last we hauled up the broken end, the first thing I saw was Owen's mark, still bright on the lead. He went quiet, then knelt and traced it with a wet thumb.

We spliced it back on the open deck, sleet running off our collars, and I tied the twine myself. When the test key clicked through from the telegraph room, the signal came faint but whole, the way a voice does when it has crossed a long distance and still means what it said. Owen laughed, then pretended he had not.
