Heart and paw print on the lower stomach
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a heart outline with a solid black paw print inside sits on the lower abdomen of a person lifting their grey t-shirt. The heart is drawn with a clean, even black outline and the paw print is filled in solid black, with no visible shading. The skin tone is warm and the bathroom setting is lit by indoor light.

Sit yourself down on that upturned crate, love, and mind the wasp by your foot, he's only drunk on the windfalls. Now, this is about the orchard at Pennick Hill, the old one behind the farm, forty-two Bramleys and a row of Cox's gone wild on the slope. And it's about a dog called Moss, who was half collie and half something nobody would own up to.

Moss had a habit in late August. Every morning she'd go through the gate before the men came, nose down, working the grass between the trunks as if she were reading a letter someone had dropped. She'd find the sweetest drops, the ones split by the wasps and gone soft, and she'd carry one to the back step and set it down like a gift for the farmer's wife.
The year the old dog went quiet, the wife, Ada Pennick, walked the rows each evening calling a name nobody answered. Ada had a bad hip and a worse temper, and she'd sit under the biggest Bramley with her stick across her knees, saying the dog was too stubborn to die in a hedge.
Then one dusk, after the rain, Ada found the print in the mud at the root of that tree. One round pad and four toes, pressed deep, as though something had stood there a long while waiting for the light to change. She didn't call anyone. She just sat with her hand flat on the bark until the apples stopped dropping in the dark, and she said, to nobody, 'Good girl, then.'
That's all there is. The gate still sticks in August.
