Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline heart drawn in a single thin black line, with a tail that trails off at its base, sits beside a tiny solid heart. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the ink is black against pale skin. The tattoo is placed on the inner forearm near the wrist, with the wearer's striped top and a dark orange backdrop filling the frame.

Every August the apples on the Hollow Tree came down a little lighter, and Marta Vose walked the rows before the wasps were up to count what the wind had left her. She had been counting for forty years. The tree was older than the lane and older than the chapel bell, and in all that time it had never once given her anything shaped like a heart.

The year the boy came up from the mill house, she found one lodged at the very top of the lean branch, where no ladder would reach. It was drawn in a single unbroken line, its stalk trailing down like the tail of a letter nobody had finished. Beside it in the grass lay a pip, black and solid as a full stop. Tobias Crane climbed for the fruit with a sack tied at his belt, and when he came down, scraped and grinning, he said the tree had been waiting for someone thin enough to reach it.

They ate it together on the orchard wall, slicing it with his pocketknife. Marta kept the heart's twin pip for herself and gave him the other, and told him to plant both in the far corner where the ground stayed wet. Neither of them thought much of it. The next August there were two saplings, and the Hollow Tree gave one heart a year after that, as if it had been waiting to be answered.

Marta lived to see the young tree bear its first. She split the apple on the wall, found the core, and left the smaller seed in the grass, as she always did, and the wind carried it the rest of the way to the lane.
