Heart-framed castle and silhouette on upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A heart-shaped tattoo sits on the upper arm, framing a night sky scene in shades of blue with small white stars. On the left a pale castle or tower stands on a light path, while a large black silhouette of a tree or figure fills the right side. The shapes are filled solid with smooth colour and dark ink, and the design is centred on the arm against a blue shirt.

The mule stopped for the third time below the Scarrow col, planting its hooves on the pale ribbon of path as if the snow had asked it a question. Ada Penrose tugged the rope, gave up, and looked for the castle instead. Hollowmere sat where it always sat, a grey tooth on the far ridge, its one lit window burning like a coin someone had dropped in the dark.

She had carried salt up this road for eleven winters, and in all of them the old oak on the right had been her waymark. It leaned out over the drop, black against the stars, its branches flung wide as if it were trying to hold the whole sky still. Her father had called it the Sentry. When the lamp failed, he said, you walked toward the Sentry's shoulder, and the ground would hold.
The mule moved at last, and so did she, but the castle window went dark just as she reached the bend. For a moment there was only the oak, the stars and the heavy hush of the pass. Then a small light flickered low among the roots, where someone had wedged a horn lantern into a hollow. Beside it lay a folded scrap of paper under a stone, and in careful capitals it read: THE SALT IS LATE, BUT THE ROAD IS KEPT.
Ada laughed aloud, startling the mule. She had never known anyone else walked this road at night. She set her sack down beneath the branches, lit her own lantern from the first, and hung it on the lowest limb, so the Sentry would have something to hold on to while she walked the last of the way home.
