Heart, heartbeat line and love script design
Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn design shows an open outline heart whose right side continues into a jagged heartbeat line. The line leads into the cursive word love, with the letters partly shaded in hatched pencil strokes. The drawing is in black and grey on textured paper, placed diagonally across the frame.

Her grandson Oswin came up the tower stair one wet March with a pencil behind his ear and a question. He had been sweet on the miller's girl, Hesper, since the harvest fair, and he could not find the words, so he had been drawing them instead. He spread the paper on the bell-frame and showed her: a heart with its left side left open, and from its right side a jagged line like the ridge of the hills, climbing and dropping, and at the end of it the word love, written slowly, as if the pencil had trembled.
Mags looked at it a long time. Then she took the pencil from his ear and shaded the letters, hatching each stroke until the paper grew dark and soft. "That line is the bell," she said. "Every hour it goes up and comes down. You don't draw a thing like that for no reason."
Oswin married Hesper in the spring, and the bell rang once at dawn, before the river was up. Mags kept the drawing pinned in the belfry window, and every thaw after that she traced the heartbeat line with one finger and said that a line which keeps going is the same as a song.
