Heart lollipop on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A red heart-shaped lollipop with a white scalloped frill around its top edge and a white stick running down to the bottom right. Bold black outlines define each shape, and the heart and stick are filled with flat, solid colour with little visible shading. Framed flash designs hang on the wall behind the arm, and a white garment sits to the right.

Mrs Pargeter had been making sugar hearts for the Margate front since the war ended, and she still stirred the pan with the same wooden spoon her mother had scorched. Every August a fresh tray of frilled lollipops went out, each heart pressed onto a stick with a paper doily tied beneath it so the children would not get sticky fingers on the pier rail.

Dennis came down the steps every morning at eight to sweep the sugar dust off the boards, and every morning he stopped at the window to count the hearts. He was sixteen and certain he had a better head for sums than anyone on the front. Somewhere around June he decided the pink ones were wasted on the tourists. Nobody bought pink. They bought the striped sticks that looked like the sea.
On the last Saturday of the season a girl from Ramsgate came in with a sunburnt nose and asked for one heart, only one. Dennis wrapped it in its doily, but his hands were not quite steady, so he gave her the change in pennies and the lollipop in the same palm. She licked the frill and laughed, and he stood there holding the sweeping brush until the tide turned and Mrs Pargeter pulled the shutters down.
Next morning the tray held nine pink hearts, a tin of white paper frills folded neatly beside them, and one new stick with a crooked red mark where someone had pressed too hard.
