Watercolour heart on the inner forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small heart outlined in thin black linework sits on the inner forearm, filled with a soft gradient of pink fading into teal. Loose teal splashes and pink drips spread out from the heart, giving a painted watercolour effect. The skin is shown in a close crop with a dark, out-of-focus background and a hand and sunflower-print top at the edge of the frame.

The hall smells of floor polish and the orange squash nobody has poured since 1994, and you are standing by the trestle table holding a plastic cup you have no intention of drinking. Across the room Mr Pargeter's old watercolour tin still sits on the windowsill where it always was, its lid cracked, the little pans dried to pale puddles. Someone has written your name on a badge in capitals that lean backwards, and you don't recognise the handwriting until you see it on the next badge along.

Maureen Teale comes over first, because Maureen always came over first. She says you still have the same laugh, and you tell her she still has the same sensible shoes, and for a while that is enough. Then she mentions the mural. The heart you painted on the wall of the art block in Year Nine, the one that was meant to be scrubbed off before the inspection and never was. You had mixed the pink with too much water and the teal with too little, and when Mr Pargeter told you to fix it you let the colours run down the brick in long drips instead, and got three detentions for it.
"They knocked the block down in March," Maureen says. "Didn't you hear?" You had heard. You had driven past the rubble on the way in and told yourself you hadn't slowed down.
Later you find the tin, lift the lid, and wet one brush with the last of the water from the cup. The pink lifts the faintest colour and the teal bleeds softly into it, and you make a small wobbly heart on the back of the reunion programme, then let a drip run down the margin, the way you were told never to. Nobody sees. That was always the point.
