Teal and pink overlapping hearts on a leg

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

Two solid hearts overlap on the side of a lower leg, with the teal heart sitting behind and slightly higher than the pink one. Both are outlined in bold black linework and filled with flat colour, with small areas of darker shading along the lower edges. The design sits alone against plain skin, with part of another tattoo visible at the bottom right edge of the frame.

The swell has the pans walking across the hob again, and you wedge the flour tin with your knee while the skipper bellows for bread that hasn't risen yet. In the second drawer down, under the tea towels, the two cutters knock together like teeth. The teal one came off your mother's dresser in Lerwick, its enamel chipped at the point. The pink one you bought yourself from a chandler in Ullapool, the spring you swore you'd stop following men onto boats.

Tonight the galley is close and the bunks are wet. Ruari, the youngest on the crew, sits on the step with a bowl of dough between his boots, cutting scones with a tumbler because nobody ever gave him a proper cutter. He presses too hard and the edges come out ragged. You take the teal one from the drawer and hand it to him without a word. He turns it over in his fingers the way you once turned the first heart-shaped biscuit you ever burned.

He cuts slowly after that, and the scones come out a little crooked, each one with a teal-stamped edge where the lamp catches it. When the last tray goes into the oven you stand with the pink cutter warm in your palm, the dent in its rim where you dropped it on the slipway. The skipper's voice comes down the hatch asking if anybody has eaten. You tell him the scones are coming, and you set the pink one back in the drawer, where it lies over the gap the teal one left, as if the two of them had only ever been waiting to be stacked.
