Heart outline tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up of a hand with a silver band and a round, faceted diamond solitaire ring. A simple heart outline tattoo sits on the side of the same finger, drawn in a single thin, dark line with some variation in weight. The image is warm-toned and softly focused, with the ring and tattoo as the main points of interest against the skin.

The napkin came across the bench folded in four, soft at the creases from a handbag. Dennis Carrow unfolded it under the lamp and found a heart drawn in one pass of biro, the line heavy at the base where the pen had rested and thinning as it climbed toward the notch at the top. "She wants the stone to sit where the line stops," the young woman said. She didn't give a name. In thirty-one years of setting diamonds in the Jewellery Quarter, he had never once been asked to match a drawing.

He worked through the afternoon. The round brilliant had six claws, and he cut each one a fraction short so it would hold without swallowing the light. Ruth, who had run the front counter since before the bank moved out of Vyse Street, brought him a mug of tea and asked where the napkin had come from. He said he didn't know. Then he looked again at the heavy stroke at the bottom and the way it lifted at the top, the same hand that had once drawn a heart on the back of a bus ticket and passed it across a café table to a girl who laughed at him and then kept it for forty years.
He set the stone at a quarter past five, when the light from the street had gone the colour of weak tea. He ran the band under the loupe, checked each claw twice, and found the heart's notch lined up with the shoulder of the setting by accident or by something else. He folded the napkin back into four and slid it into the envelope with the receipt, because the young woman had asked for it back. Ruth switched off the strip light. In the dark, the diamond kept a little of the street lamp, and it looked, for a moment, like someone had left a window open somewhere in the room.
