Matching infinity symbols on two ring fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest together over white orchids, each with a small infinity symbol tattooed on the side of a finger. The linework is thin and even, rendered in soft grey-black ink with minimal shading. The close, shallow-focus composition places both tattoos at the centre of the frame, with the blurred background softening the flowers.

Dear Tom,

The Thames has tied itself in a knot again below Culham, so we're lying up at the old wharf with a jam jar of white orchids Mrs Pell brought aboard, and I've had three days to think about loops. You'd laugh. Every bend out there curls back towards where it began, only a yard or two further down, and the lock-keeper swears the water has never once left the valley.
Harry Coyle worked that lock for forty years and he taught me the figure-eight knot the way other men teach a hymn. Over and under, he'd say, then round the back and through the middle, and you never cut the rope, you just keep going until your hands know it. He painted an eight on the lock beam once, a faded grey thing the children still touch for luck. When the gates were finally shut for good he told me the water would remember the shape even after the stone had gone.
I didn't believe him until Thursday, when I tied a bowline to the bollard and the rope doubled back on itself so neatly I couldn't tell where the loop ended. I stood there a long time with the orchids going soft in the sun.
So I'm not coming home yet. Tell Mum the boat is sound and the water is fine. Tell her I've found the place where the river goes round for good.
Love, Ruth
